Plano, TX - Keisha Bennett was five years old when she dreamed of owning her own hair salon. In 2008, her dream came true. The salon brought in a much-needed second income for her family, but just a year later, Keisha and her husband divorced, and she had to raise four children on one income.
“Emotionally, it was very tough,” says Keisha. “We lost our house. My house was foreclosed.”
Keisha and her children moved into a small apartment. On top of the many bills, Keisha also had to pay for daycare for three of her children.
Keisha remembers, “Financially, it changed a lot, which emotionally, that brought on a lot of tension, and a lot of stress.”
Keisha also tithed to her church, something she wasn’t willing to stop, even when it became difficult.
“It was so hard just to pay payroll,” Keisha remembers. “Every two weeks I was just crying.”
While watching the 700 Club, Keisha felt God telling her to give more than the 10 percent she was giving to her church.
“A husband and wife were talking about their finances,” says Keisha. “They also had a business. And they also were tithing, and how god had really changed their life. And I just took that to heart. I am dependent on God, in so many areas. And when he said give more, I just did it. I didn’t question it. I didn’t ask. When I started putting god’s needs before my own, that’s when the turning point hit.”
Keisha started giving $20 a month to the 700 Club. She also dedicated her business to god.
“The business has grown a lot, since I’ve started giving more,” says Keisha. “And financially, since the clientele has grown quite a bit, finances have grown quite a bit.”
Today, Keisha sees her business and her faithfulness to giving in a new light.
“When I walk in my business, that’s me walking into God’s ground, every day. That’s his business,” says Keisha.
Today, business is more than 30% better than last year, and Keisha says it’s because of her giving.
“And in my own words, you’re missing out,” says Keisha. “You’re missing out when you’re not giving.”
