A bill extending dozens of tax breaks is headed for President Barack Obama's desk.

The measure, approved by the Senate Tuesday in a 76-16 vote, extends $40 billion in temporary tax cuts for businesses and individuals through 2014. The president is expected to sign it.

On Tuesday, Obama signed a $1.1 trillion spending bill into law that will keep most of the government running for the next nine months, with the exception of the Department of Homeland Security.

Critics of the president's recent executive action on immigration limited funding for that agency because it enforces immigration policy.
