United Nations officials say it will take several more months to get the Ebola crisis in West Africa under control, meaning they will miss their initial Jan. 1 goal to curb the outbreak.

"We must be prepared for ups and downs, difficulties and successes," U.N. Special Envoy on Ebola Dr. David Nabarro said.

Nabarro made the comments at a meeting promoting greater collaboration between the U.N. and the business community in responding to Ebola.

The World Health Organization said it doesn't know how many Ebola patients there actually are.

Sierra Leone has been reporting 400 to 500 cases a week, and Liberia 10 to 20 new cases daily.

During this outbreak more than 18,000 people have been infected. And more than 6,500 have died in West Africa since the initial case in Guinea a year ago, making it the worst Ebola outbreak in history.
